Govt To Import 1 Million Ton Sugar,Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said here Tuesday that the government has decided to import one million metric tons of sugar to help overcome the domestic shortage of the sweetener.

The media briefing after the federal cabinet held here with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in the chair, Kaira said the cabinet approved the policy of sugar for the 2009-10 season, saying there was no shortage of the sweetener in the country.

“The supply of sugar at low prices to consumers is the real problem and the government is taking steps to ensure that, the minister said, adding that the domestic sugar production in the current year is likely to remain around 30 million tons.

Kaira said the gas supply to CNG stations and industries remain suspended for two days a week under the newly adopted policy of gas load management. However, he maintained, domestic consumers have uninterrupted gas supplies throughout the week.

He told the media that the Federal Government has also approved a ban on new gas connections to CNG stations and industries in December 2009-February 2010.
